Cheryl will be presenting all of the workshops for this year’s conference!!

She was previously the staff sign language interpreter for the Arkansas state courts and is now a freelance interpreter in Mississippi. She has been a facilitator with both Project CLIMB (Cultivating Legal Interpreters of Marginalized Backgrounds) and the IRIS Project (Improving Rural Interpreting Skills). In addition, Cheryl has recently continued her mentoring journey with SIGN (Southeastern Interpreters Guidance Network). Cheryl began her interpreting career in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada prior to moving to Arkansas in 1999. A Deaf-parented interpreter, and raised in a large Deaf family, Cheryl lives in Louisville, Mississippi, with her husband and has 4 children and 6 grandchildren (soon to be 7). For fun, she enjoys riding her motorcycle, volunteering with veterans’ programs, gardening, and spending time with her family

Workshop Descriptions:

Creating Beneficial Interactions within the Interpreting and Deaf Communities (0.4 CEUs)

This training is designed to challenge participants to think critically about their current relationship with the deaf community and explore topics related to how systems enable power, privilege, and oppression in the sign language interpreting profession.

Frameworks for Ethical Decision Making  (0.3 CEUs)

Participants will review the commonly discussed ethical decision-making frameworks in the sign language interpreting profession, the Demand-Control Schema, and the Role-Space Framework. Participants will also explore what it means to make deaf-centered ethical decisions.

The Legal Environment is Closer Than You Think!  (0.3 CEUs)

How often have you or your colleagues said, “Oh no; I don’t touch legal interpreting!”? Do you really know how close you are? As interpreters, do we have sufficient knowledge of the variety of systems in which we work, and do we understand their impact on the deaf community, interpreters, and the people within those systems, i.e., healthcare, VRS,  K-12, or legal?
 

Workshop Objectives:

Creating Beneficial Interactions within the Interpreting and Deaf Communities: 

  • Define the following concepts: power, privilege, and oppression.

  •  Distinguish between equality and equity. 

  • Describe how conversations about power and privilege are relevant to the sign language interpreting profession.

  • Describe how the NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct can be interpreted in ways that could support or harm deaf people.

  • Identify ways in which interpreters can benefit from interacting with lifelong members of the deaf community.

  • Describe valuable lessons interpreters have learned from deaf people in their local communities

  • Develop ideas to enable interpreters to change/improve their relationship with the deaf community.

Frameworks for Ethical Decision Making: 

  • Summarize the Demand-Control Schema and how it can be applied to ethical decision-making.

  • Summarize the Role-Space Framework and how it can be applied to ethical decision-making.

  • Describe how interpreters can shift their current practices to become a deaf-centered ethical practice.

The Legal Environment is Closer Than You Think!:

  • Understand the relationship between parts of a system and a system as a whole

  • Work more effectively to address barriers by understanding the perspective of the system and those people within the system

  • Interpreters will change their perspective from an interpreter-centric one to a system perspective, allowing them to engage with the system more effectively to achieve language access for deaf individuals 

  • Have a better understanding of the settings which they work in that have both indirect and direct legal overtones.

  • Participants will learn to identify when a setting has become a legal one or has the potential to become one, and how to appropriately handle such situations in order to limit the potential harm to all parties involved.

LRID is an RID-approved CMP Sponsor for continuing education activities. This program is offered for a total of 1.0 PS CEUs at the some content knowledge level.
