Description:

This workshop provides an overview of the Louisiana School for the Deaf (LSD), including its mission, program features, and student opportunities such as academics, athletics, and bilingual ASL/English supports. Participants will explore how LSD is evaluated within the context of Louisiana's accountability system and compared to both traditional public schools and other deaf education settings, while also examining current challenges and areas of growth.  Participants will deepen their understanding of LSD's unique strengths, needs and impact.

Educational Objectives:
  • Participants will be able to explain LSD's key program features.

  • Participants will explain how LSD is evaluated compared to other schools in Louisiana.

  • Participants will be able to describe the struggles and triumphs of LSD at present.

Biography:

Dr. Natalie Delgado is a Deaf Ecuadorian trilingual educator, who centers ASL, Spanish, and English in her work and life. She holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology, as well as master’s and doctoral degrees in Deaf Studies and Deaf Education.

 

Dr. Delgado currently serves as Executive Director of the Louisiana School for the Deaf and brings over 15 years of experience in Deaf education. Her professional background spans a wide range of roles, including statewide outreach director, outreach coordinator, early interventionist, and elementary and secondary educator. She has also taught coursework at the university level for both Gallaudet University and Lamar University.

 

A dedicated advocate, Dr. Delgado actively serves in leadership roles across multiple boards and organizations. She is a strong proponent of multilingual, multimodal education and has presented and published on topics including early intervention, literacy development, equitable access for Deaf and hard of hearing students from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds, and socioemotional supports in educational settings.
